Adaptive reuse of historic buildings can be a challenge, but one we will gladly take on to exercise our creativity and see unique spaces come to life again. Our clients for the former Church of the Icon in Gordon Square were planning to transform the 4,000sf dance hall turned church into offices, showroom and shipping/receiving spaces for their businesses. We were able to obtain the required zoning variances and develop a design that brought the building up to current code standards and met the functional needs of the business. Unfortunately, the unique challenges of this building, site and the user needs resulted in a high construction budget, and the clients decided to seek out a building better suited to their needs with less intervention. We hope this special building is able to find its match soon. Images show our design options and iterations for the exterior renovation portion of the project.
